How To Be a Rebel : Sustainability featuring artist, Ari Bayuaji and moderated by Stephanie Dickson.

A fireside chat series developed in conjunction with the “Rebels, Rascals and Mavericks” exhibition which is currently displayed at Popi's. In this session we will be diving into the transformative power of art and its role in addressing one of humanity’s greatest challenges – sustainability.

Ari Bayuaji

Ari Bayuaji was born in Indonesia in 1975. Moving permanently to Canada in 2005, he studied Fine art at Concordia University (2005-2010). Dividing his time between Montreal and Bali, the artist is known mainly for his art installations, which incorporate the use of found and ready-made objects that he finds in different part of the world, thereby exposing himself also to the different mechanisms of the cultures.

Ari Bayuaji is an expert in conveying aspect of daily life, as his works usually try to show the overlooked artistic value in everyday life trough objects and places and their roles within society.  He has been consistent in using found/old objects from all over the world as the material and subject matter in almost all of his artworks. These objects as his creative material might be old, but the “content” as a work of art is completely new as he inject his work with emotion that also influenced by contemporary issues he seek to address.

His works has been collected by major institutions like Muséedes beaux-arts de Montréal, Musée national des beaux-arts du Quebec (Canada), Musée Pointe-à-Callière (Montreal), La Fondation Agnés B. du Paris (France), Coral Triangle Center of Bali (Indonesia), Precious Plastic of Bangkok (Thailand), and Danfoss (Denmark).

His work has been exhibited in some international solo exhibitions including Warin Lab Contemporary of Bangkok, Thailand (2022), Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Singapore (2022), RedBase Art Gallery of Sydney, Australia (2022), Coral Triangle Center of Bali, Indonesia (2022), The Esplanade Theatre on The Bay Singapore (2014 and 2019)Parkhaus in Malkasten Düsseldorf (2018), Conseil des arts de Montréal (2018), a collaboration with Agnes B. FondationParis at Ste- Alvere, France (2017), Kunsthal Rotterdam in The Netherlands (2017). River Run à Kennedy Center, Washington DC., USA (2023), Busan Sea ArtFestival in Busan, South Korea (2023), and Biosphére de Montréal, Canada (2024-2025), Bangkok Art Biennale 2024 (Thailand)

Rebels, Rascals and Mavericks

Rebels, Rascals and Mavericks is diverse collection of artworks, and personal narratives that encapsulate various forms of rebellion. This exhibition seeks to navigate these dualities by presenting rebellion not merely as a destructive force, but as a vital element in the ongoing dialogue between conformity and individuality.

More than an exhibition—it is a conversation. We hope to inspire viewers to consider the power of dissent in their own lives and the world around them. In a time when global societies face unprecedented challenges, this exhibition serves as a reminder that rebellion, in all its forms, remains a powerful force for change.

This exhibition is jointly curated by members and affiliates of the Singapore Art Gallery Association (AGAS): Mizuma Gallery, Richard Koh Fine Art, JW PROJECTS, Sundaram Tagore Gallery and Metis Art.
