We've always been distracted.
This event has ended.
Everyone’s worried their brain is broken, by TikTok, by smartphones, by too many tabs open at once. But what if we’ve always felt this way?
For the debut edition of The Shortform, a new salon series for the culturally curious, we’re diving into Joe Stadolnik’s essay “We’ve Always Been Distracted”. From ancient Rome to the printing press to the age of TikTok, Stadolnik reveals how every generation believes its attention span is under siege. But maybe distraction isn’t a glitch, it’s a feature.
Created as a counterpoint to time-intensive book clubs, The Shortform makes cultural conversation easy to drop into. Reading material will be provided on the day—just show up, grab a drink, and prepare to rethink everything you thought you knew about focus.
